Hampshire County Council Groundswell is supported by Hampshire County Council Adult Services to provide home-based care to people in the county. Southampton City Council Groundswell is supported by Southampton City Council to provide practical and emotional support to people living in the city. Medical experts Groundswell works closely with the medical and nursing team based in the Genito-urinary department (GUM) at the Royal South Hants. Groundswell volunteers and workers often accompany clients to the GUM clinic and are welcomed as part of the team. If clients request that volunteers stay with them during medical consultations, this is accepted and welcomed by the staff. We also work closely with the HIV specialist nurses, to enhance and complement the care given by the statutory services. Our work is kindly supported by the Department of Health and Southampton City Primary Care Trust. Umbrella Groundswell is represented on the multi-agency HIV
treatment and Care Group, the Refugee Umbrella Group and the Volunteer
Coordinators Group. Associated groups Within the voluntary sector, Groundswell works in association with other HIV groups and in particular with Positive Action. The Groundswell Client Services Manager and one of the Project Workers co-facilitate the Positive Women’s group with staff at the Centre and that is held at the centre once a month. It is a key service to support positive women and has been able to provide sensitive and culturally acceptable support. Peer support has now developed but the support of the agencies remains essential to provide a safe framework for the women. Groundswell also maintains links with Positive Action in Aldershot and Body Positive, Dorset. Groundswell
has links with CLEAR, an organisation supporting asylum seekers and refugees and
SCRATCH, an organisation that provides food, furniture and clothing to those in
need. Firgrove have also generously provided baby clothes and equipment to many
of our pregnant clients. The Waterside Foodbank has very generously helped us in
supporting clients with food parcels. Community Groundswell has continued to work with local churches to raise awareness of HIV. Groundswell works in the community to educate and inform people about HIV in order to reduce stigma and discrimination for those living with the infection, as this acts as a further barrier to people being able to access the treatment and support that they need.
